On Wednesday i stayed in with a Chinese takeaway and the Brit Awards on the Tele. It was brilliant.

As i tucked in to my szechaun chicken and watched Gary Barlow descend from the ceiling in a spaceship, dressed in a bizarre lycra top and sunglasses (??), i was quite at peace with the world.

Award season is incredibly glamorous, Hollywood stars botoxed and tit-taped to perfection, however the Brit Awards, for me, is so much better because it is unconventional.

The stage scenery took on a rustic, hippy, country-chic theme, with enormous cardboard cows roaming the stage, and a sparkly pink wig-wam as the stage entrance, a long way from the traditional crimson curtains of every other awards show.

Alcohol was flowing freely, as Elbow(winners of Best British Group) clearly demonstrated, making the ceremony feel like you were in an enormous pub with the best live music set ever, i mean how often do you get Coldplay and U2 on the same bill?

However, i have been astonished by the amount of criticism given to Kate Winslet's acceptance speech at the Golden Globe Awards, after winning both Best Actress, and Best Supporting Actress. One film critic suggested that Kate may not be so lucky at tonight's Oscars, because of her 'ridiculous speech'. Kate Winslet was breathless, incredibly emotional, and managed to forget Angelina Jolie's name while accepting her second Golden Globe, and has been highly criticised in the media for appearing fake and slightly hysterical.

I'm sorry, but give the girl a break! Of course she was going to be emotional, if she had been composed and polite, then she would have been criticised for being ungrateful. The notion that her chances of winning an Oscar, such a prestigious award given for awe-inspiring performances, could be ruined simply because she did not conform to the stereotypical scripted dribble we are normally bored with, is absurd.

I for one am routing for Kate to win the Oscar for Actress in a leading role tonight, and will be disappointed if she doesn't faint with emotion...its Hollywood, there's meant to be drama!
